Olazabal Places Faith In European Young Guns Dougherty And Larrazabal

Bangkok (December 24): Englishman Nick Dougherty and Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal have been named as the final two members of Jose Maria Olazabal's European Team for next month's Royal Trophy.
The third edition of the team match play event between Asia and Europe will be played on January 9-11 at Bangkok's Amata Spring Country Club. The European team will be bidding for a third successive triumph.
The 26-year-old Dougherty said: "I am truly honoured to have been selected by captain Olazabal to play for Europe at the Royal Trophy. This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I will do all I can to make the most of it."

'Old Man' Vijay Nails Tiger's Season-Ender With A Stellar Performance

Thousand Oaks, California (December 22): Vijay Singh has finished off the golf season in style, making a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole on Sunday for a one-shot victory over Steve Stricker in the Chevron World Challenge.
Singh closed with a five-under 67 at Sherwood Country Club and won Tiger Woods' charity event for the first time. He finished at 11-under 277 and earned US$1.35 million.
It was his first tournament since he captured the FedEx Cup and its US$10 million prize on September 28.
Anthony Kim and Jim Furyk both had a share of the lead on the back nine until they collapsed over the final five holes. |

Major Mastery Next On The Agenda For Asian Champion Singh

Bangkok (December 21): New Asian number one Jeev Milkha Singh believes he can now win a Major title which will enable him to ‘sit at the same table with my father’.
The Indian star wrapped up his campaign at the season-ending Volvo Masters of Asia on Sunday to be officially crowned the 2008 Asian Tour Order of Merit champion and immediately set out his next goal which is to challenge for one of the four most prized trophies in world golf.
“This has been the best year so far in my career. In 2006, I also had four wins but I rate this season better due to my performances in the Majors.

Asian Big Guns Come A Cropper As Basic Shows Winning Instinct

Bangkok (December 18): Neven Basic of Australia grabbed the first round lead at the US$750,000 Volvo Masters of Asia on Thursday with a six-under-par 66, days after enduring one of the most stressful weeks of his career.
The 30-year-old Australian produced a bogey-free card at Thai Country Club to set the pace in the Asian Tour's season-ending event, which will bring the curtain down on another record-breaking season.
But with the exception of Lin Wen-tang, who is in a share of second place on 68, it was not a good day for the big guns. Thongchai Jaidee, bidding for a third successive victory, struggled to a 73 and is in joint 41st place, while Jeev Milkha Singh, already assured of the Asian Tour Order of Merit title, soared to a 76 that left him tied for 65th in the 68-man field.

Augusta Incentive Looms Large For Chinese Taipei Ace Lin

Bangkok (December 16): Lin Wen-tang, one of the great success stories of 2008 on the Asian Tour, has the chance to put the icing on the cake following his finest season with a good finish in this week’s season-ending US$750,000 Volvo Masters of Asia.
The 34-year-old from Chinese Taipei is currently ranked 51st in the world and should he finish the week one place higher he will earn a starting spot in next year’s US Masters for the first time.
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy is currently .01 points ahead of him and so Lin has him very much in his sights.

Sorenstam Keeps Emotions In Check As Swede Takes Her Final Bow

Dubai (December 14): Germany's Anja Monke triumphed in Annika Sorenstam's farewell tournament on Sunday, shooting a four-under-par 68 for a three-shot victory in the Dubai Ladies Masters, the season-ending event on the Ladies European Tour.
The 38-year-old Sorenstam signed off in joint seventh place after a final round of 71. In typical style, she rolled an eight-foot birdie putt into the cup on the 18th hole at the Emirates Golf Club's Majis Course.
There were whistles and cheers from the gallery as she finished, before raising her putter in the air and hugging her caddie of nine years, Terry McNamara. There were only a few small tears and Sorenstam kept he composure.
