Presidents Cup: Woods Strikes Decisive Blow As Americans Retain Title


San Francisco (October 11): For the Americans, the script could hardly have been written any better. With Tiger Woods gaining a measure of revenge on Yang Yong-eun, the United States swept to a successful defence of the Presidents Cup. Entering the final day at Harding Park Golf Club with a 12½-9½ lead, the Americans won six and halved two of the 12 singles contests. Although Japanese teenager Ryo Ishikawa's stock rose with a competent last-day success, he could not prevent Greg Norman's Interntional Team sliding to defeat by a final margin of 19½-14½.

Olympic Inclusion A Catalyst For Golf's Growth, Says Nicklaus


New York (October 10): After an absence of more than a century, golf will return as an Olympic sport, and the greatest golfer of the last century called the decision historic and a 'great day for the game of golf'. Jack Nicklaus, a Global Ambassador for the global effort to have golf returned to the Olympic Games, was elated with Friday’s vote by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to return golf, along with rugby sevens, to the Olympic programme for 2016 and 2020. The approval from the membership during the IOC’s 121st Session in Copenhagen, Denmark, means that golf will be part of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which last week was selected by the IOC as the host city for 2016.

Asian Major Man Yang Primed To Thrill Hong Kong Galleries


Hong Kong (October 8): Tiger-tamer Yang Yong-eun will spearhead a world-class field at next month’s UBS Hong Kong Open. The Korean ace – who became Asia’s first Major winner when he triumphed at the US PGA Championship in August – has confirmed his participation in the US$2.5 million showpiece. Also in the stellar line-up will be defending champion Lin Wen-tang of Chinese Taipei and the man he beat in last year’s unforgettable play-off duel, brilliant Northern Irish youngster Rory McIlroy. Flying the flag for Hong Kong will be talented teenager Jason Hak, who created history at the 2008 Open by becoming the youngest player ever to make the cut in a European Tour event.

Copenhagen (October 6): Administrators in developing golf nations claim Olympic recognition can elevate the sport to another level and provide a fast track for growth. They’re keeping their fingers crossed that International Olympic Committee (IOC) members vote to include golf in the 2016 Games. Ashit Luthra, president of the Indian Golf Union, says Olympic recognition could spark grass-roots participation in the world’s fastest-growing nation.
