Singapore (January 10): The next Asia Pacific Golf Development Summit will be staged at Mission Hills in China.

The agreement to stage this major industry event was concluded on January 8 in Hong Kong.

"We are delighted to be able to play host to this very strategic and important industry event and will do everything to ensure that all delegates are given a truly great experience", declared Dr. Ken Chu, Vice-Chairman of the Mission Hills Group.

Mission Hills is the world's single largest golf complex boasting a total of twelve world class golf courses designed by some of the greatest names in the game.

The 2008 Summit will be held on December 2-4 and it will be staged at the venue's brand new purpose-built multi-million dollar international convention centre. The timing of the Summit will mean that it is staged back-to-back with the Omega- Mission Hills World Cup Of Golf tournament.

The theme for the Summit is: GOLF DEVELOPMENT - MAKING ASIA WORLD CLASS AND KEEPING IT THAT WAY!

"We have decided to bring the Summit to China because we feel that Mission Hills fits in perfectly with the theme of the event which has to do with making Asian golf clubs world class", pointed out Mike Sebastian, managing director of Asia Pacific Golf Development Conferences Pte Ltd, the owner and organiser of the event.

He went on to add, "Mission Hills is living proof of Asia being able to deliver a truly world class product matched with a standard of service that is absolutely world class".

The organisers are now actively engaged in recruiting world class speakers to present major keynote addresses at the three-day event. "Based on the huge success of our inaugural Summit, we have been able to attract interest from an excellent cross-sectional sampling of industry heavy hitters and we expect to roll out our list of speakers and the programme within the next three weeks", Mike said.

Unlike the inaugural Summit, the 2008 event will be structured to address critical topics with keynote speeches which will then be developed and discussed at specially structured break-out panel sessions. According to Mike, "We feel that this would be a more effective way to conduct proceedings and it will also allow for interaction between speakers and the delegates".

He went on to explain that this was being done in direct response to feedback received from delegates who attended the 2007 Summit.

Another important feature new to the 2008 Summit will be a trade exposition which will be open to industry players. "We are not gunning for an exhibition on the scale of the PGA Merchandise Show .... this will be a more intimate exhibition that will allow exhibitors and delegates to network and work on business collaborations", explained Mike.

A total of 30 exhibition booths will be provided at the Summit venue.

"The 2008 Summit will be bigger, better and more focused and it will definitely be very business-driven", Mike stated.

The 2008 Summit website will be turned on "live" on January 31 and it will provide all delegate registration details together with other relevant information.

SINGAPORE (November 22): The exponential growth of golf in Asia has fast-tracked the need for a dedicated magazine to help keep track of the rapid pace of development in the industry.

In response to this pressing need, Asia Pacific Golf Development Conferences Pte Ltd will be launching ASIAN GOLF BUSINESS in January 2008.

"The publication is being produced as a trade magazine designed to provide the industry with a communications platform to keep everyone in touch with the day to day goings-on in the business", explained Mike Sebastian, the publisher of the new magazine.

The launch of this magazine comes in the wake of the recent success of the inaugural Asia Pacific Golf Development Summit held in Singapore. "We received a lot of feedback on the need for improved communications and based on this tremendous response, we decided that the time was right for the launch of Asian Golf Business", Mike pointed out.

Asian Golf Business will focus on matters relating to sustainable golf course development, trends and best practices in the management of golf courses, new equipment and hardware, recruitment opportunities and a host of other trade applications.

The magazine will be produced as an electronic edition and will be distributed to all golf course owners, operators and developers in Asia. It will also be promoted extensively through the wide network of the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, which represents 29 national golf associations throughout the Asia Pacific geographic footprint.

A dedicated website www.asiangolfbusiness.com will be launched in conjunction with the new magazine.

Golf Courses Benefit From Long Term Plan - ASGCA
A Special Correspondent
01/02/07

Gregory B. Muirhead
With more golf courses considering renovation, golf course decision-makers need to think carefully about long term planning, says Gregory B. Muirhead, President of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA).

“Faced with increasing, competitive pressure in the marketplace, the effects of wear and tear, changes in clientele and technological advances, successful golf course managers have responded by electing to remodel their facilities,” Muirhead explains. “Part of a smart remodeling plan is the development of a long-term master plan. Having a master plan in place allows clubs to adopt and implement a thoughtfully-conceived and financially-responsible blueprint for the future of the facility that provides continuity during committee turnover and stability in the budget process.

“One of the most important benefits of the master planning process for course decision-makers is the realization that the various components of a golf course each have a life expectancy. Course managers are wise to consider the ‘life cycle’ of their golf course components, paying particular attention to recurring costs of items like irrigation, drainage and sand bunker construction,” he continues. “These items have specific life expectancies, thereby enabling prudent managers to plan ahead for eventual replacement. Doing so maintains course integrity, improves the user experience and can even save money in the long run.”

Muirhead noted that ASGCA now offers a brochure, “Master Planning: Questions and Answers,” that can help golf course managers, superintendents, professionals and owners understand the process of developing a master plan and the importance of assessing the typical life expectancies of golf course components. ASGCA has also produced two other publications that can help clubs who are investigating the planning process: a one-page chart that lists golf course component “life cycles” and a brochure titled “The Remodeling Process: Questions and Answers.” Each year, ASGCA also presents several “ Remodeling University ” programs, designed to educate course decision-makers about the intricacies of course remodeling, including planning, financing and execution.

These free brochures and more information about Remodeling University may be obtained by calling ASGCA at 262/ 786-5960, emailing at info@asgca.org, or writing to ASGCA, 125 N. Executive Drive, Suite 106 , Brookfield , WI 53005.
